Marc's Free Prompt-- How will midterms be for you?

As the third week of classes is nearly coming to a close, the quarter point of this term is slowly creeping in on us, and with it comes the arrival of the infamous midterms. This time in the term can be stressful for many of us, myself included, so I wanted to check-in on how you're doing.

If you're feeling stressed during this time, I plead that you take a short break, breath in and out, and calm yourself. First and foremost, each and everyone of you are geniuses; you don't need a test score nor a certain grade to prove that you're smart to me. Though, I know many of you will believe that these scores are crucial for your future. I just wanted to say that I won't think any differently of you for the grade you end up getting.

I myself am kinda nervous for midterms, it'll be my first college midterm and my first ever remote exam. For those wondering what I did in my last semester of high school, my school unfortunately didn't have the infrastructure to move online, so classes ended relatively early for me. Since I’ve never had an experience in either remote exams or midterms at SCU, I’m kinda terrified to see how midterms are going to be for classes with exams.

To alleviate this stress I’ve been having, I started to do a series of activities to calm me down. First of all, I try to get my daily eight hours of sleep. Sleep is crucial to how you will function for the day, without a goodnight’s sleep you won’t be able to perform to the best of your capabilities. My next activity is exercising for at least thirty minutes everyday. When I get anxious I can’t stand sitting in one place, I have a whole lot of energy to burn. I advise, if you can get out of your house, to go on a short run or walk to burn all this excess energy you’re holding. Lastly, talk to your friends and family- they’re here to support you. When I’m given the support of my friends and family, I don’t feel as stressed as I once did and actually end up feeling motivated to make them proud.

Goodluck everyone on our first midterms! I hope you guys can perform to the best of your abilities.

  1. I like how you have found activities to relieve your stress, and I admire your kind words to calm us down about midterms. I relate to your nerves about midterms. At my high school, when we switched to remote learning, we only took open note/open book exams that were never timed, so I am also nervous about how midterms will work out for me at SCU.

  2. I hadn't really given the midterms much thought until reading your post! I hope things will go well given our circumstances, and I'm glad I only have two classes with test-like midterms which definitely alleviates some stress. Also, I also focus on getting adequate sleep, although I need 9 hours instead of 8.

  3. I've got midterms scheduled for next week, and I'm every bit nervous as I am stressed. I admire the system you've set for yourself in getting enough sleep and taking care of yourself; it's something I'm still trying to work on! Thanks for the tips, and good luck with all your midterms too. You're going to do great :)

  4. What's sad is that I have been so focused on keeping up with coursework that I haven't had time to worry about midterms. College moves so much faster than high school, and at this same spot in a high school class, we might be done with 1 of 6 units. I hope you and everyone else does well!

  5. I can totally relate with what you and Calvin - coursework has been keeping me busy enough to not worry about midterms yet. However, I really like how you shared what works for you in relieving stress for midterms and thank you for the motivating message! We can do it!

  6. I haven't even really thought about midterms yet...time really does fly. Your thoughts about exercise, talking it out, and SLEEP are totally relatable and helpful. I'd also like to add having an impromptu dance party to that list--sometimes, I just need to get out of my head and throw my limbs around to some music. It doesn't have to be skilled dancing--just some grooviness as a mood-booster.

  7. I encourage everyone to take Marc's advice about de-stressing during midterms. Also reach out to your professors if you are experiencing challenges; many of them will help you find the flexibility you might need.
